How To Care For Your Jewelry

We know that there's nothing like opening a tiny gift box to see a piece of gold jewelry glowing out at you. Gold plated jewelry makes a great alternative to real gold jewelry as it looks just as beautiful as the real gold.

With gold plated jewelry, a layer of real gold is applied to another metal so it has the same appearance. In the case of our jewelry, we mostly use 14k gold to plate on sterling silver, brass and stainless steel. When needed, the jewelry is plated in a layer of palladium before gold-plating as palladium tarnishes much slower than other metals and this under-layer decreases the tarnishing risk.

Due to the fact that this jewelry has a layer of gold on it, different care is needed than with sterling silver or real gold pieces. Be aware that, in time, the plating can wear off, especially if not taken care of properly.

Here is what to avoid when wearing your beloved jewelry:

  • It is best to stay away from any abrasives to clean your gold plated jewelry. Baking soda, cleaning chemicals, or tough toothbrush rubbing will only cause your plating metal to remove. Anything thus abrasive will remove the outer layer of gold, in time. This includes a lot of polishes that are used on real silver and gold.
  • Alcohol is also not friendly when it comes to plated jewelry. And alcohol can be found in perfumes, sanitizing hand gels or some house cleaning products.
  • Remember to take your beloved jewelry off when swimming in the sea or in a pool.
  • Avoid rubbing plated bracelets, necklaces and rings against each other.

Here are some useful tips on caring for your gold plated jewelry:

  • Clean your plated jewelry with a cotton ball or a very soft cloth to remove any dust, dirt or oil it has acquired. Gently rubbing the surface of your gold plated jewelry using a soft jewelry cloth also helps restore shine.
  • After wearing, keep your jewelry in a jewelry box separate from other types of jewelry you have to avoid scratches.
  • Do not spray on perfume or other sprays while wearing your gold plated jewelry. Wear your jewelry AFTER you have sprayed on your favorite perfume so that chemicals on the spray or perfume do not interact with your jewelry’s metal.
  • Remove your jewelry before swimming, bathing and exercising.
  • Avoid rubbing plated bracelets, necklaces and rings against each other.

How To Care For 14k Gold Filled Jewelry:

14k gold filled jewelry is the hot trend right now. It does have real gold in it, however you need to clean it without harsh chemicals.

  • It is best to stay away from harsh chemical jewelry cleaners.14k gold filled products are resistant to tarnishing because the outside layer is actually gold and is thick enough to prevent oxidation of the inner material.
  • We recommend minimizing exposure to moisture and chemicals such as perfumes, salt water and chlorine in swimming pools as they take their toll on fine jewelry.
  • Clean your gold plated jewelry – To clean your gold plated jewelry, mix a few drops of mild dishwashing detergent with warm water. Rinse your gold plated jewelry in the solution and allow it to air dry.
  • Buff gold plated jewelry with a microfiber cloth – After washing and drying your gold plated jewelry, buff it with a soft microfiber cloth. Over time, oil can make the gold flake off, but buffing can help minimize oils.

Gold plated pieces of jewelry are a great alternative for real gold jewels. Aside from its affordability, it also comes in a variety of styles and designs.

Follow these simple steps such as removing your gold plated jewel before swimming or exercising, put on after perfume is absorbed, do not spray while wearing it, clean it regularly, polish it with a microfiber cloth and keep them in a separate box.
